The Lombardi Trophy:
The trophy, created by Tiffany & Co. is valued at $25,000, made entirely of sterling silver, and depicts a regulation-size football in kicking position that, standing 22 inches (56 cm) tall, weighing 7 pounds (3.2 kg), it takes approximately four months and 72 man-hours to create. The words “Vince Lombardi Trophy” are engraved and the NFL shield is affixed in a separate item onto the base. After the trophy is awarded, it is sent back to Tiffany’s to be engraved with the winning team’s name, the date and final score of the Super Bowl, and then is sent back to the winning team for them to keep. For the first four games, both the NFL and the AFL logos were in the center of the trophy.
Starting from Super Bowl V through XLII, the NFL shield with more than 2 stars has been on the forefront. As of Super Bowl XLIII a newer, modernized NFL shield (with eight stars and a rotated football designed akin to that atop the trophy) replaced the older logo. Otherwise, the trophy has had no significant changes made since the first Super Bowl. Complete wiki article.
The Super Bowl & The Packers
There have been forty-five Super Bowls and only eighteen teams have won it. The Steelers have won six and the Cowboys and 49ers have each won five. The Packers have four Lombardi Trophies however, they have won 13 NFL Championships.
Three Packer Quarterbacks
The first and second Super Bowls were won by the Green Bay Packers. This was our quarterback. Bart Starr‘s ability to excel on the field was so great it could not be surpassed by his failures as a coach. As a player won 5 titles in eight years (1960-1967) and appeared in 6 title games (the first, in 1960, a loss to the Eagles where Chuck Bedernik tackled Jim Taylor and refused to let him up as time elapsed). Of his coaching we will speak no more. He is enshrined in Canton.
Super Bowl Thirty-One was won and Super Bowl Thirty-Two was lost by this man. Many things can be said about Brett Favre both good and bad. There probably never was and probably never will be a quarterback who held lightning in a bottle like he did. The problem was that it was like hitting the hyperspace button on Asteroids and he didn’t always have a great defense to get him out of his own disasters. His records are what they are but none impresses me as much as his string of consecutive starts. He will be enshrined.
Super Bowl Forty-Five was won by Aaron Rodgers who succeeded Favre three years ago. Much could and has been argued about Rodgers with reference to Favre and I have done so. All of it is speculation and worth not much more than my advice on who’ll win at Wimbledon next year and I had to look up how to spell Wimbledon. What we can say is that he has played very well for those three years including an NFL Title and a Super Bowl MVP Belt. He has big shoes to fill and it will be fun watching.
